If you cant chat a bit during the early part of a half marathon those guys are going to be passing you around mile 10 any way. They're smarter than you.
Definitely true. In my most recent half, the other guys were conversing much easier than me starting at about the 4 mile mark. I lost the group at mile 5 or so. They didn't seriously pick up the pace until mile 8 and finished two minutes ahead. I would have liked to go out a bit slower, but it was either go with the lead group or be all alone the entire race, as the next group was way back.
+1
That's the college kids for you. Lol.

Oh really? Pray tell, how's that?
I'm slow, everyone is in front of me!
Carole used to talk in races, and do it in several languages!

I can't talk during a half marathon. Maybe a word or two if I really have to, but it's tough. And I've negative split almost all of my halfs.

Has anyone else noticed this? Guys in their 50's and 60's who are cruising maybe just above 7 minute pace. So you know back in their day they were quick little suckers. Everything I start running with them in a race (half marathon, 10 miler, 15k etc) they strike up conversations.
...
I realize that in your twilight years of running you won't be able to run close to the times you could in your younger days but why even pay for a race if you are just going to yuck it up and slow yourself down?
Let me get this straight: you're a young guy who can't run faster than a 7 minute pace, and you've got your panties tied up in a knot because some guy in his 50's or 60's is able to keep up with you *and* talk at the same time, while you're gasping for breath?
Sucks to be you, I guess.
Listen, all you 'young' old guys. Stop asking me how old I am while racing! How annoying. I'm trying to race, not out for a Sunday stroll in the park.
Then, at the awards ceremony, I see you guys up to 3 age groups (50-64) below me getting your medals...get over it and just race!
when did I ever say I wear panties?

Probably because you're an 800 dude and don't have the necessary endurance for a half. jk.
I have only done two halfs, but I was able to chat a bit and have fun with the crowd during my halfs and still feel completely trashed at the end. The only thing I have learned is that I go for it too early (miles 8-10) and probably should wait a little longer before trying to dig deep.
This is what the OP is referring to, and it isn't a bad thing. Being bothered by it is bad though, not being able to handle some idle chatter during a run probably puts a person at least somewhere on the autism spectrum.

Something to the effect of
"Lot more hilly than I thought!"
"Does this headwind mean a tailwind on the way back?"
"Nice job buddy! Wish I was your age again"
Or if you are passing them
"I'm x years old...not bad for an old guy!"

Sorry about that. Next time, I'll just grab you by the balls and head butt your teeth out of your head.
Hmm.... nah, never noticed this, actually. Maybe it's a regional thing? Where are you racing?
When running on "Pure Hate" I focus on trying to say something kind to my competitors to distract them from my actual state of mind.

Meb had a conversion with Rupp during the last Olympic Marathon Trials. It went something like, "Stop clipping my heels, douche!"

I used to notice this back in the day when I was a young runner. Older guys who are running well enough to be at the same point as a younger runner like to announce to you that they are there...you are in your 20s and they are in their 50s and running along side you. They want you to notice them.
I think the problem is with liberal millennial snowflakes. They are not as strong as us. They are living in a virtual reality, where technology controls them. They are busy looking at garmin splits, listening to other millennials singing trash on some fancy gizmo, and thinking about how they will load everything onto strava after the run. When I was younger, we would go run 100 mile weeks, and the chat was cheerful, gay and positive. We would have conversations during our tempo work, discussing interesting topics, like how our stocks were rising in the steel mill & General Motors, or how our boss Billy set up a union after his heroic battles in the Viet Cong. Even when we were dying in our workouts, we were still able to discuss real, important, and meaningful things.
I see many running groups of women that talk more than they run. Anyone who’s able to chat while he runs should either go to a cafe, or lift up the pace
Girls talk too much when they run. Another really annoying thing is that they walk abreast to each other all the time, so if there are more than 4 of them, they block you. It is like they are programmed to block. Boys would understand that they shouldn't do this, and walk in file if necessary. I definitely like boys more. Girls shouldn't even be running. Whenever I went for a run with my coworkers in the steel mill, back in my youth, we would never see girls running, and if you did see them, they would be the talk of the village. I remember one time our favorite Oklahoma sheriff Buck going after a local girl Daisy, because he was concerned that she might be running away from someone.
