anyone can get a job that pays the bills.
the hardest thing to do is to find someone who will pay you for something worth devoting your life to.
cheers.

From people who make very little money to people who make a lot of money it seems as tho nearly all hate what they do.
What occupations do people not hate?
I'm am american guy, 58 (in shape, look low 40's tops), software architect and developer for a danish company which makes a pretty cool product that helps a lot of people. Make $150K a year. 4 weeks paid vacation plus 2 floating days, great health care benefits, excellent 401k matching. I have a great deal of autonomy and have designed and been development principle on software projects released to 74 countries. They respect 'thinking/design time' as being MORE important than just pecking away at a keyboard. I have short commute and even then can work from home whenever I want. Collaborate on a daily basis with people all over the world, which I really enjoy. They fly me to Copenhagen 3 times a year and put me up in the Hotel Phoenix; super sweet place walking distance from all sort of great clubs, restaurants, cool stuff. They let me arrange my own flights so on the trips home last year I stopped for a week in Iceland twice, and back through Paris the third time. Though most people don't understand the first thing about software it does in general seem respected and when I tell people what I do the response is usually pretty positive. Did I mention Danish women are amazing?
Being a global company we're kind of 'on' all the time, but I live odd hours anyway; I'm often up at 3AM, will work for awhile, connect with some Danish colleagues, then take off to work out and get back online around 9ish.Some people might find that funky but I enjoy it and am used to this being woven into the fabric of my life. It's generally pretty chill and it is rare for me to feel like work is occupying too big a space in my life.
For a regular dude like myself it doesn't get a lot better.
I teach in a public school in Upstate NY. I'm eligible for retirement. Any time I want I give 6 months notice and I could go.
I chose to stay on as the state (and us teachers) restructure the way my course is taught.
I love my job. In fact, I feel "funny" calling it a job.
Yes, with very few exceptions, all careers suck. The bible teaches us that work is a punishment for sin, and it certainly feels like that most of the time. I am 49, and have never had a job that I could honestly say that I liked. And once you have children, then you are absolutely forced to continue on, no matter what. Basically, all I am these days is a paycheck.
I am now a teacher, and, thus far, have had the opposite experience of the upstate NY poster above. I teach in Appalachia, and I find it very difficult and stressful. The pay is abysmal, too.
I work in biotech and I enjoy my job. Early in my career I enjoyed 10-20% of what I did so over the years I have focused on getting better and better at what I love and I have surrounded myself with people who enjoy doing the stuff I don’t. Most days I get excited about going to work.
Tough one. Definitely not "all" but most. Largely depends on the person and their filter. Ever notice how some people hate their jobs (and just about everything else they can find a reason to despise) no matter what they do? Negativity = misery.
Some of the best advice I ever got was to like what you do regardless of the pay or other benefits. I actually like going to work and look forward to Mondays (most of the time). My job can be stressful and involve long hours and sleepless nights sometimes, but also has a nice adrenaline rush element and a good amount of down time where I can come and go as I please.
My own advice fwiw, if you are miserable, quit complaining and switch it up. Noting worse than someone who is unhappy but does nothing to effectuate change. Get off the hamster wheel.
This incoherent and rambling, yet brilliant, post took some time and creative thought! 8.5/10.
For the record, I dig my job. 10+ years now and it has only gotten better. "Find a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life." I won't lie and agree with the quote 100%, but my gig is pretty close to that. I hope you find yours as well.
Teaching (and to a lesser extent coaching) are tough one. Some days/weeks/months it's the most wonderful, cathartic, life-changing, joy-centered endeavor (not a job) you could possibly ask for. Other days/weeks/months it's the most emotionally draining, infantilizing mind-fuxk that the devil ever dared to conjure up. So, on balance, it's ok.
NOOOO. I have to start college and I dont know what to do. either way, all careers suck or else will leave you living in a box.
Went to college, got an office job and really hated it. I changed jobs and I basically worked for two jerks.
Started a company working outside. I struggled for about 10 years few years but then it started getting good around 2013.
I love the work. It's physically demanding and something people don't want to do because it is hard and it somehow people think it lowers their status when they work with their hands. Fortunately, I don't care about that. Plus, I get a good workout in everyday and I get paid for it.
I work 24/7 from March to June, I don't like that but the rest of the year I am just cruising working about 5-8 hours a day. I make my own schedule, coach in the afternoons, and go on vacation pretty much whenever I want. This year I project that I will make 175k. It's a good life.
Customers are a pain in the neck but the public is like that no matter what you do. It makes it a little easier if you are making money.
what kind of company are we talking

What about getting a job in national parks? Park management? Something outside?

I am a former state park ranger, aka glorified security guard. The job was boring as hell. There was some action Friday nights and Saturdays, but a mall cop is busier day to day.

I am a retired airline pilot and if such thing as reincarnation exists, I want to do it all over again. Best career in the planet.
Good luck with your endeavors (try to be more optimistic as well otherwise you'll be miserable the rest of your life)
It's a construction specialty company. I am not well respected for doing it but who cares, right?

I'm a desk jockey in corporate America. I actually like my job. It's a good blend of quantitative and qualitative tasks and that helps me maintain a well rounded skillset. Pay is good and I rarely work more than 40 hours a week. Very little stress due to being a key IC in a high turnover department.
What I don't like is a few key people. Middle management is rife with insecure, image conscious try hards. Luckily, it's not so bad outside of my department (supply chain and operations) so at least our general leadership is at least competent. Once the pandemic is over, I'll probably move on to a different department, but I'm going to just chill for now.
I know a few people who love their careers, but not many. They are very diverse in terms of pay and hours.
1. Doctor (radiologist)
2. Photographer
3. Fitness instructor at the gym
Most everyone I know in a corporate desk job hates or merely or tolerates it
