The older you get the harder it is. Young folks can't relate. My college warm-up times or easing jogging was about a 7:30-min/mile pace. I currently can't run a 5k at that pace but hope later this year after losing another 20-lbs. I'm 56, 6'1/2" and 195 and could probably only manage about 25 something minutes right now. I was 160 in college, that make a huge difference as well.
That's massive size for a 56 yoa who wants to run distance. Trust me it won't work without some serious weight loss. You can get away with being a heavier runner when you're a younger guy. However, when you get past 50 the joints, ligaments, tendons, etc., can't withstand the forces of regular running particularly speedwork, racing, etc., - higher intensity stuff. I ran some decent times (mile, 3k & 5k) in my 20s & 30s at 5-7, 170. But now at 56 and even a little lighter at 165, I've had a plethora of debilitating injuries all related to higher intensity efforts & racing (I need to drop some more weight if I want to continue to race but I like to lift weights and not run all the time). No surprise that most of the speedsters in the 50+ age groups are small, thin, slender builts who don't spend much time lifting weights.
Good luck...but without the weight loss it's going to be painfully frustrating.
