Was reading Bernie’s book “Our Revolution” and pleasantly discovered he used to be an XC/track guy in high school. Ran 800 and mile (4:37). He also recounts racing at Van Cortland Park.

Goes to show that running doesn’t cure you of pure insanity.

What exactly does that mean?
So the conclusion is that having a running background leads to the best political campaign?
his daily walk to the bathroom age-grades out to a 2:55 mile tho!

He was good but not sure about that 4:37 as the article here recounts

He claims to have run a 4:37 mile which is not necessarily the same thing as having actually run one.
He is a politician after all.
Richard Blumenthal repeatedly stated he had fought in the Viet Nam War. It was exposed as complete BS. In fact, he took many steps to avoid being drafted The MSM covered for him and lied by calling it a miscommunication or one time minor mistake and now he is a US Senator.

The new tax bill that you support (but probably haven't read), increases taxes on hard working capitalists in NY and CA, and will increase federal government handouts to red states.
When a man who wears makeup says socialism is bad, you blindly pound your chest without realizing that you're a beneficiary of socialism. Why don't you just move to Venezuela already?

I can confirm he ran a 4:38 indoors at the Armory during in a race where he took third. I found it in a 1959 or 1960 newspaper scoreboard section because I was interested. Using not only data but common sense I arrived that the meaning of this time at the end of the pre-modern era was equivalent to running a 4:13-4:14 in the present day. So he was go-to guy at a competitive school and someone the kids in the area wouldve looked up to on the running scene. I saw in an interview where he said it wasnt that fast by today's standards. On the topic of distance running in high school Sanders was a competitor who worked hard and found reason to compete. At that point in time it was not overly common to train all year-round, everyday. It was an after school activity not a way of life. That's why you see a lot of basketball players from that era running cross country and also doing field events in track.

Typical...thinking anyone who doesn’t agree with Bernie f’n Sanders is a republican or Trump supporter (I am neither). I actually am one of those “hard working capitalists in NY”, and I can report from the scene that there is no excess of love for the Donald in these circles. But hey, a broken clock is right twice a day, and socialism is certainly a disaster.
At least there are some honest Senators.
Some years back there was nutty Congressman running around telling anyone who'd listen that he ran a 3:51 mile. LOL!
3:51!!!
I told him if were that good at the time he would have run that time that he'd have been the world record holder.
Some people just like to embellish their athletic career I guess to feel better about themselves.
There was an image on this website of the newspaper result with a 4:37 or 4:38 mile for Sanders.
Pretty solid in those days and he does not claim that it was even as good as it was, considering how little they were able to train
in the city at the time. His politics over the years show that this guy has much more integrity and consistency than any other candidate in my memory.

They trained hard all year around whether running or doing other sports. Most people were very fit, not like today. That area of Brooklyn was a nice area (still not bad), no problem running everywhere all year around.
I taught with Sanders' friend and classmate who is quoted in the article and he was extremely fit in his 60s.
bernie ran 5:27 but he had 1 teammate at 4:17 and 3 teammates at 4:27. By using the laws of socialism, Bernie therefore ran a 4:37 mile
not long after that, bernie got kicked out of a commune for being too lazy - true story

My wife grew up two blocks from Madison and I was at her house daily from our HS years until we were married. In fact, I ran to her house fairly often...about 2 miles away. We're about 10 years older than Sanders and, you're right, the area at the time was fine for training. Flat as a pancake but workable. Madison's track was awful. Some of the pictures of Sanders racing in HS look like they are from Midwood Field. The area is still pretty solid.
I ran a 4:35 mile. So him and the child abuser Trump can lick my crusty hole.

Looks like we found someone with a political science degree to explain that for us! Thanks!
Will Hillary be out of her boot and recovered from the stress fracture from the XC season in time for outdoor track?
Ahhhh bringing back the good old threads
I bet he had some good battles back in the 1930's with guys like Paavo Nurmi, Jack Lovelock, Glenn Cunningham, and Gunder Hagg. The good ole days!!!!
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
