Spikes are unquestionably faster throughout the race. Do a race pace interval workout and switch from flats to spikes halfway through. Your splits will be faster in spikes with the same effort level. You have a longer stride length in spikes.

why do you think spikes should give you a longer stride length at slower speeds? Are you suggesting a runner's feet would slip without them? That's an issue with sprinting but not slower, particularly on a good track.
I think distance spikes are a relic from the olden days of dirt tracks.
