Honestly, i think this is the answer. The other answer about biking making it impossible to run correctly is clearly wrong, because the elites have good running form.
Look at the average plodder in the last 10k of a marathon and there's a good chance you'll see some pretty terrible form too. Same in any other sport - the elites generally have good form and the non-elites either don't or can't maintain it when fatigued. Triathlon is a bit special in that there are very few genuine elite athletes - it's possible to be quite high up the national rankings while absolutely not being an elite athlete. Guys like Alex Yee (13:37 5k) have great form. Some guy who used to be a swimmer who puts in the hours on the bike and can can grind out a 16 minute 5k? Not so much, though he'd probably still do pretty well in the triathlon.
