I've been drinking coffee since I was a young elementary student, now 30. It's been an everyday habit since 13-14ish. I can only drink two cups in the morning, anything more and it messes with my stomach. After weekend long runs a cup or two of coffee with my meal helps aid recovery, and gives me an extra step throughout the rest of that day. Just don't get into the habit of loading it with sugar, try even a lil bit of butter, and enjoy.

If you don't already have a tolerance for caffeine try drinking green tea.
Caffeine is caffeine. Why would getting the caffeine from green tea be any different from getting it from coffee? Or from black tea (same leaf as green tea but roasted) for that matter?
From my observations at work, those that drink coffee every morning are no more alert than those that don't, unless of course they skip the cup, then they are zombies. The alert part wears off after a while and leaves you with: I can't wake up without it. Why start what over the long term becomes an expensive habit for no long term gain?
I used to be a tea drinker and started with coffee in the last decade, in my 40s. I always hated coffee but when my friends started a coffee import and roasting business and coffee shop, I found I liked it if it was good coffee. Now I'm pretty much addicted.
I've gotten completely off caffeine several times for periods of months to 1.5 years. After the initial withdrawal, I don't notice much difference really. So why drink it? I like it. It's not an expensive habit compared to everything else. It's less than a dollar a day and it's worth it to me.
I have a lot of habits that have no long term gain. Like posting here, which cost much more than a dollar if I put a value on my time. Sometimes I do things I like without a detailed analysis of the costs and long-term benefits.
Better to have a bump of cocaine now and then for that boost.

...or it may not. Either one of those could be true. Who knows? Not you, me or the the writer of this article.

That's not so obvious. It's also possible that the people that drink coffee started to do so because otherwise they'd be zombies. It's called selection.
Do you really want to be one of those fools who can't start their day without their precious cup of idiot juice? Only benefit is that once you are hooked most companies will feed your addiction for free.
Many year's experience has taught me that caffeine products wreck your nerves.
Coffee is addictive. But a cup or two a day is good for you, recent research supports this. Lowers risk of heart disease and cancer they say.
I wish I drank it it high school. My league would run indoor track meets Saturday mornings. The whole Dual County League in the Boston 'burbs running 4 simultaneous dual meets each week. It was exciting, competitive fun.
I was a meat and potatoes kid. I would get to the line on Saturday mornings feeling like I needed to take a dump. Constipated.
A bit of coffee and for sure I woulda pumped out a good log or two -- my high school indoor best of 4:35.1 coulda been a few seconds faster with coffee I'd bet!
My advice is if you want to have more energy don't consider drinking coffee in the morning, consider going to bed earlier at night. How many calories in a cup of black coffee? Zero. It contains no energy just drains your adrenal glands because it attacks the body, coffee contains neurotoxins that act as pesticides to kill bugs that try to eat the plant. I know this sounds weird but energy comes from your brain via sleep . Your brain is like a car battery and food is the fuel, sleep recharges the brain. That's why after you sleep you have new energy. If you get enough sleep you won't need coffee. Energy comes for free you just have to earn it by cutting out late nights.
Helps you Poo.
Yeah, OK mindfulness yoga weirdo. Go back to your green smoothies and yogurt enemas while the rest of us drink a cup o' morning joe to wake the phukk up.Pusssy. STFU.

Caffeine pills. 200mg, like an espresso. Cheap. Consistent. Easy.

Coffee is good for you in moderation. It enhances endurance performance in some people, but the effects are not the same for everyone. In my case, it helps me focus on my race game plan..
For max endurance performance you have to take higher doses. Something like 300-500mg depending on your weight. So for PED use caffeine pills are better.
Don't take 400-500mg straight up, if you have never tried caffeine before. :)

It would maybe be a good idea to buy a blood pressure monitor and find out how coffee/caffeine effects your blood pressure before starting a long term coffee habit.

If you are going to get addicted to something , coffee is probably the best thing going. I think it's a good idea that if you don't do it, not to start.
I have been drinking it pretty much since your age and it is a bad and sometimes stupid habit.
