The best response is "yes" because it is true. I don't care how many studies you cognitively biasfully dig up. Most runners combine excessive volume with bad form that sends repeated shock up the tibia into the kneecap, gradually causing irreversible damage to the cartilage, with no inflammation or other symptoms until it is too late.
Some runners understand this and take steps to mitigate or eliminate the risk, but most do not. Those who do wouldn't flat out deny that it's "bad for the knees" but instead explain why it usually is and how to adjust so it isn't.

Running is bad for knees if you're a 240 pounds heelstriker

At what volume, approximately, are we damaging our knees?
And bad form in the respect means what?
thx
I have torn PCLs in both knees and a torn meniscus in my left. I'm 30 and I assume I will develop arthritis at some point. I limp the first half mile of every run. I figure I'd rather run now, when I'm still youngish and fast, and hope for cartilage replacement being available by 2035.
But, the exception of acute trauma is not an argument for running ruining knees.
