I heard him say it. Seemed pretty serious to me... if he was BSing, I hope I never play poker with him.

I wonder if UPenn fly a GE flag above Franklin field all year for winning the Corp DMR just like they do with all the college relay champions
the 1200 meter leg was run by Barton Crist, formerly of georgia tech. GE actually got most of their lead from their 800 meter leg. Tom ran 4:17 for his mile and made up some ground, but GE had too big of a lead. He also looked pretty tired at the end. Pretty solid run for not being in great shape if that was the case. It was really hard to watch due to so many people on different laps. They really should have had 2 heats or something.
it is possible, that Holman, who probably could have split 2:47-2:50 in his prime, really underestimated how much not training for a few years would hurt him...
he said not to expect much from him, and in his mind, that meant 3:08-3:10...
brings up an interesting idea of how much would other elites slow...
what would you expect of EL G a few years after retiring?
holman did not look to be killing himself out there.
el guerrouj had a long article written about him in SI a few years ago. he mentioned that after he retired, he might try running a big marathon like nyc for fun, "really slowly, in like 2:25".
Parlapiano had to have run faster than 4:17. We had twenty seconds on Vanguard at the anchor handoff, our anchor ran 4:21, and we finished about 11 seconds in front of them. I'm pretty sure on this - we knew Vanguard had a stud anchor, so were paying close attention to our margin.
i had a watch on parlapiano, thinking he may make a run at GE....it was 4:17.

I disagree with what you're saying. I never read Holman expecting 3:08-3:10. He stated himself in 5% shape and was almost joking about any chances of running well. He didn't come across as underestimating anything about the relay.
Does Gerry O'Reilly still work at Vanguard?
