Finally, how much you need to run depends from a lot of things, and I am not suggesting endless high mileage weeks to everyone, the main goal is to maximize both the aerobic and anaerobic capacities that are in balance for the event. And that depends not only from the event but also which kind of type you are, you know.

Quite similar story for me. Ran a best of 1.58.7 (split at 54 sec) and 3.58.7 in the 1500m until age 26. After that with weeks on 50-60 miles I ran lifetime bests at 3000m 8.20 , 5000m 14.20 , 10000m 29.51, marathon 2.22.
I came to a quite good level...but....if I had known then what I know today the PR:s had been something much better.

I was a 4:42 HS miler. That year I ran 29:34 and average 4:52 for 15k
I took arenasp(ego) and mildronets and lasted 4 years smashing it at every workout.high mileage.doubles. I was only a weekend warrior and was regional runner so only did it to see have fast and hard I could go.
sever burnout depression and now can just about manage 25 miles a week.
my opinion after being a test subject my self is that people running in the 100s will burn eventually or are on something heavier than I could ever find.

High mileage combined with workouts like you mentioned is risky. Doing it continuously is even more risky. Did you take a down week every 3-4th week with rest days, like I´ve suggested? Did you take several weeks off every year? Human body can tolerate periods of high mileage, but not forever if you accumulate fatigue week after week. Stress from other aspects of life has an effect too. Even a little bit too much of stress continuously will cause problems in the long run. Ultimately you will break down. Periods of high mileage itself isn´t a problem. Most people are better to stay away from hard-easy weeks and instead keep training consistently with a repeatable mileage. Still, it´s better to keep an easier week/extra days off every now and then to make sure that you will recover. I´m not a high mileage ambassador. So many ways to train, individual differences, different events, many things to take into consideration when planning training.
unfortunately no I never took a break.i raced every week took drugs to get faster but only to see how fast I could go never to cheat over anyone.i had access to a very powerfully drugs called erythropoietin and meldonium so I was recovering ridiculous fast but like you say we are all human no matter what we take and still blow a huge up big time.never got injured just mind couldn't handle it anymore.
I still read up on running but wouldn't ever do that again as I would never be able to handle that load again.so just mess about to keep fit doing Daniels 800m 20mile week plan like 8x200m,4x800m etc just for fun.most likely will never race again. I'm only 25 got a baby on the way so other priorities. I think a lot of people smashing out of 100miles as weekend warriors no pros mustn't have a big family life especially if they work.
now what makes me wonder if a young man like me making low wage can get that kind of drugs for fun to see how fast I can go than the pros doing it for money are 100% on them.
So, just to recap, you cheated so others must be cheating. You don't have it in you to grind heavy miles anymore, so anyone with a family must be sacrificing their family life to be grinding out miles.
I'd be offended if I were a higher mileage guy, but I'd say that mode of thinking is and has been typical of the thinking of people your age - you tend to see things primarily through the lens of your recent experiences, and lacking in objectivity. Many will overcome that. Hopefully you will too.
you are most likely right. I'm perhaps a bit to young. just waiting for the burnout to go is annoying and the fatigue makes you wonder how the heck I could manage a family job and run 100mpw but it will pass.just be smart about training and balance is how its done.
