People who follow golf are a heck of a lot more wealthy than those who watch track.
Its why the ads are for Rolex and Rolls Royce.
And in track its for cases of Yoohoo.

How rich is the Prince of Monaco? I believe he was at the recent Blue Diamond meet. Ever been to the Summer Olympics or IAAF Worlds? Not cheep, tickets way more than attending any Golf Majors. Add air and hotel, no slumming there.
BUT, non serious runners often turn to more serious runners for advice on gear, specially shoes.
I don't even know how many friends have come to me for shoe advice, and a few others for GPS watches, compression gear, etc advice.
If the elites influence my purchasing habits they'll be influencing my friends' as well, even if they never watch any running.

Golfers enter tournaments & compete. They have 4 majors. They sell merchandise.
Track runners hardly ever compete. Don't have a schedule. And don't sell merchandise.
It's sad but track has no marketing right now. Plus it's athletes will take 20k so why pay them more?
There's a guy in track who likely makes more. You may have heard of him despite the company that endorses him. Puma. Usain Bolt of course. I have heard and think he gets more. The odd thing is that Puma does not really use him. Go to a Puma store or website and try to get a Bolt shirt. It is the oddest thing, and greatest waste of a top track athlete ever. The sad thing is that such promotion would be good for track and field, as Bolt brings out the crowds, nets the attention. Lance Armstrong had, for a time (and no digressing here) a Nike division. Bolt? Some spikes. Now he's on his final lap, so to speak, it's way too late, and I soooooo wish Nike had signed him back when. You can say a lot about Nike perhaps, but they would not waste a once-in-a-lifetime Usain Bolt I don't think.
The most visible BY FAR track athlete in the world and one of the most famous athletes across all sports has been a walking billboard for Puma for the last decade. I think they got their money's worth
Nobody wants Bolt merch.

Other than you mom, sister, and I would say your girlfriend, but I shouldn't speak for your hand

Okay, you make a good point. He's a great billboard. But they could have easily doubled what he brought them in fame. In revenue that is. A line of nicely made shoes (not spikes, which few buy). Shirts, shoes. I mean, heck, the lightning bolt image. It's so perfect. Never once used by Puma that I am aware. Ever try their running shoes? Er, um, not in league with others in my experience.
I thought about this, it is more about brand awareness in a rich persons market with golf. Golf⛳ as a sector probably loses Adidas & Nike 💲💱 but a PGA event is on all day.
