Nike pays golfer Jason Gay $10 million a year - Do you think their total US track endorsement budget is that big?

(And you're probably right about the whole track budget thing).

Nobody cares about running except a few idiots who post threads about such things as which Greek god would scrawny Evan Jager play in a hypothetical movie starring mostly unknown scrawny runners. Why should Nike waste money on athletes that most people have never heard of in a sport most people don't care about? Besides, jealous losers like you only complain about Nike regardless of what they do or don't do. You can't even run this crappy site, yet you presume to critique a global corporation.

If you add up OTC, NOP and the BAC those budgets alone are over $10 million.

Melbourne Track Club.

The 2 US sprint groups, their coaches (Smith and Bobby).

Then you have all the individual global athletes Nike sponsors.

Then you have federations.

Then you have events (though that might not fall under endorsements by what you're comparing with Jason Gay).

Then you have Capriotti sending Rob Lotwis over to Kenya with $500,000 to pay off people for their illegal activities (again, doesn't fall under endorsements but this area is pricy for Nike sports marketing).

Golfers enter tournaments & compete. They have 4 majors. They sell merchandise.

Track runners hardly ever compete. Don't have a schedule. And don't sell merchandise.

It's sad but track has no marketing right now. Plus it's athletes will take 20k so why pay them more?

Pretty much. Golfers and golf competitions endorse expensive stuff that the fans actually buy.

When marketing influences me, I buy a $30 pair of shorts from Brooks instead of Nike. When marketing influences my golf crazy boss, he buys a Cadillac.

What do you mean track runners hardly every compete?

Runners run diamond league every other week, then your throw in national championships,road races, and national track meets. That makes for a pretty substantial schedule that rivals the schedule of golf players.

A healthy distance runner will race twice a month, some may even race 3 times a month. It's only during Olympic year, or WC year, where runners are very conservative with their schedule so that they can be in top, top form

Problem is that 99%+ of runners watch 0 diamond league meets/year and only a small fraction watch something like boston/NY. The running market is as large as the golf market. But the golf market follows the sport a lot more so investing in top athletes makes sense. The running market does their own thing so investing in an elite runner makes zero sense.

Wannabe consultants, this is the perfect type of job interview question. Let's do the math. How many track US athletes does Nike sponsor and what does it total to?

I'm assuming it's over 10 million but this summer heat has sapped my energy to figure it out myself.

Jordan Spieth's contract with Under Armor has been kept private but I've read it's more than twice Jason Day's. I assume you meant Day, not Gay. Jason Gay is a sports writer with the WSJ. Also, Rory Mcilroy's contract with Nike is significantly more than Jason Days. To put it in perspective, I would wager any amount that Jordan Spieth's caddy makes more than any track athlete.

Why would anybody even question the disparity between track and other sports??? 98% of people in the world think running is a punishment.

Nike don't sell Cadillacs. Day doesn't even use Nike clubs. He's only advertising their clothing. And he's advertising to old white guys. How much Nike gear are they going to buy?

At least when they pay Ronaldo and Lebron millions they have a much bigger target audience. But I guess they know what they're doing since they're giving McIlroy $200m and they gave Tiger however many hundreds of millions over the years.
