Well said. A great plan to develop his speed of which he will need if he's going to be a world class 5000m runner. Too many 5k guys don't develop their speed in the beginning of their careers and wait until it's too late.

Definitely showing impressive maturity and good for Drew for taking a long term, incremental approach. He definitely seems like someone who could have done well in the NCAA system developing his skills as a runner, but due to the circumstances, going pro was the right choice. And he's making the most of it by learning how to race among his peers and getting manhandled sometimes.

People hate on him because he's "only" a 3:38 runner at age 19, when 16 year old Ingebrigsten is in similar shape and Joe Kenyan ran a 3:33 at age 13. But this approach is what's going to make him a medal contender when he's 26.

Can't wait to see what he does in the final!

Agreed. In fact, Drew may be the most "liked" runner on LetsRun in quite some time, and for good reason. He's well spoken and actually has a personality unlike Rupp and so many others. From everything I've read it sounds like Drew's coaches have always had a long-term approach to his training so hopefully we can see this talented young man excel.

I do wish he'd clean up his form. That head bobbing action sure does look silly and is a big energy waster.

Still Schwartz. Seems to be working out well for him.

I realize that he had no good reason to turn down the money, but as a fan I do wish he'd gone through the NCAA system. He would be much more exciting to watch in races against guys near his own level. It'll probably be another 2-3 years at least before he's really competitive with the big boys, if indeed it ever happens-you never know.

I'm a huge Drew fan. I agree that it would have been fun to see him go the NCAA route, but for another reason: Biomechanics. I fear we won't have 2 or 3 years to see how far he's going to go.

Fortunately he's better at running than he is at English grammar.

He should stay at the 1500 for US champs if at all possible. Have a look at the complexion of the 5k/10k teams. They are only getting more African born dominate. We may not see a single non-African on the team this year. If the WCAP program keeps gowing strong, it's an uphill battle for those spots.
