This is interesting--thanks for posting.
Given that you can get LLM (master of laws) and LLD (doctor of laws) degrees after having obtained a JD, it didn't make much sense to me to call a "mere" JDer "doctor." However, the NJ Supreme Court (sorry, don't have the cite) has held that in fact it *is* all right for a law-school grad to refer to her- or himself as "doctor"--apparently contradicting the ABA.
TL, DR: Whether it's okay to call a lawyer "doctor" seems to vary by state.
I guess why do other countries use the term doctor for lawyers and not the United States?
