If you want to race a 1500 and steeple, wear spikes.
If you want your shoes not to fall apart, don't wear Nike.
middle distance you probably want spikes. 5/10 you can get away with flats. Just do some workouts in your spikes so you get used to them.

Adidas Avanti is a versatile 1500-3000 type of shoe, with drainage for the steeple. Probably dozens of WC/Olympic medals have been won in it.
