You either run in the front or the back on a track. Doing the math, running on the outside costs you an extra 4 meters a lap.... times 8 laps is an extra 32 meters. Roughly 6 seconds. And she lost by .07 seconds.
You see people running in the second lane all the time at all levels. It really is not necessary to do this at any time during the race at any level if the event is longer than one mile.
Your early strategy should be to shoot for a realistic spot in the first lane from the gun. Slow down to get there if you have to. Then when the pace slows you can always move up. Even in the Olympics we see this work.
In the 800 and Mile events you have to be very careful that the lead pack does not get away from you IF you have a reasonable chance of winning.

The LRC pundits scream don't lead, don't lead, don't lead!
Then when someone wins from the front they scream, ran too wide, ran too wide, ran too wide! or some other similar nonsensical babble.
It's almost like they think there's more than two options...
Are you serious? There are always more than two options in a race!
This was a typical high school girl's race. The problem is many top girls do not have to run a top strategical race all season. Then when faced with someone as good as them they do this kind of thing. But do not blame the coaches. Kids can be stubborn if they have had success in running a certain way.
The entire pack went out too fast. Boys will do this as well, but they are much smarter because they care more about their sport. Yes, most girls are not avid fans of the game.
Do not blame the coaches, wait until you are in that situation before you judge.
Also, it very hard to reign in young girls early in a big race like that. Their legs feel too good
early.
