Personally, I think Tony Kornheiser - as well as a butt-ton of other pundits, journalists and sportswriters - will never have even the faintest appreciation for what guys like Lance Armsrong do until he gets on a bicycle and rides 100 miles or more a day (flat or mountain, I could care less) for 21 days.
Do I think Lance is arrogant, self-centered and cocky? I think his upbringing says a lot about his approach to life. He's pretty much gotten where he was at with minimal assistance. He appears exceedingly loyal and grateful to the people who stood behind him when he was ill and rehabilitating and could pretty much give a rat's butt about the myriad of people who try to use him to further their own agenda. While I'm bummed about his marriage going south, it's not a judgement call against him.
Do I think Lance used PED? Not a chance.
I don't buy into the Nike-spun mythology of Lance, but I respect him because of the sacrifices he has made to get to - and back to - where he is now. Remember, this dude was a world champion before he got the cancer...means he kicked butt in a one-day race that lasts eight hours. After the cancer he kicked butt in a three-week-plus classic race.
He's pretty much a genuine guy. A pissed-off, T-shirt-wearing, rock star-dating, etc., etc., kind of guy. Of course, that's the kind of guy who would watch Kornheiser and agree that Kornheiser is full of crap.
