Recovery from Deep Water Running Intervals

I've been deep water running recently because of injury and following the Pfitzinger plan loosely. It has four days of "hard intervals," which I have been treating like work on the track in terms of intensity

My question is about recovery time between sessions. Of course on the track, most people need several days of recovery. DWR has way less impact, so injury-risk is much lower, but the cardio can be brutal and I'm absolutely wiped after a good session. For all the other physiological systems involved, is less recovery time required and the main issue with the track about impact?

You have to build up to it and adapt. I have a plan with two hard running days a hard eliptical day and a hard bike day. It took about six weeks of working up to make them all be what I wanted them to be in terms of volume and intensity. And yes, couple of times I needed to binge on sleep.

Yeah, agree on building up. The Pfitz plan goes right into four hard sessions the first week and builds time as the weeks go on. He justifies this with the fact that steady pool runs don't help much.

I have no issue with pushing myself four days a week, but I tend to lack body self-awareness and rarely feel I need a recovery day, even when I do need time off. But perhaps recovery isn't much of an issue for hard pool work?

I would like to work as hard as I can while still receiving the maximum physiological benefit.

Be patient. recovery from fatigue is just as important as recovery from ripped muscles. So the lower impact isn't giving you the physical symptoms of all running , like sore calf muscles or whatever, that force you to chill, but it's still work.

The first time I tried the 4 day workout routine , all hyped up and ignoring fatigue, I got pretty sick with a cold, and the cough lasted for months.

Be flexible. Trust your build up. You still might need cutback weeks. It will come along.

It's as good as plan as any. You have to get creative to not go crazy with the monotony. Mix it up with different leg kicks and directions and angles. Another tip is to stay hydrated as crazy as that sounds, throw heart rate out the window and go by feel with the intensity. 4-5 hard days is doable with good nutrition, hydration and sleep.
