JFK and LBJ did that multiple times.
So why has it suddenly become a problem once Trump tried to do the same?
J Edgar Hoover had compromising information about those presidents, so they didn't do anything to upset the Deep State...

Apologizing and regretting Cotton's piece is stupid, weak, wrongheaded and helps the Trumpists.
I think what happened is that NYT management simply could not stand up to its black employees, who insisted on self-censorship.
And now the Rs have a talking point for years and years...that the media is ridiculous and biased.
The distinction between opinion and news is too subtle for Republicans, regrettably. They are used to it being the same thing on Fox so they don't understand that in real news outlets the two are different.
The NY Times is not obliged to publish garbage as an opinion piece. That's the role of Zuckerberg and Facebook.

I'm sorry to break it to you, but Trump will probably win in November. There will be an extremely powerful disinformation campaign around coronavirus painting the lockdowns as ineffectual, unconstitutional, and uncalled for, with Trump being the brave contrarian calling for an end to the lockdowns.
This will be effective in any swing state as I have seen many conservatives on social medial turn against long time conservative governors, calling them tyrants for implementing lockdowns. Trump would be a fool not to take advantage of this anger, and I am confident this will get him reelected.
You aren't "sorry"; it's your fantasy. It will remain a fantasy - like most of your views.

more than 100,000 Americans have died of COVID-19 on the same President's watch. South Korea and the US announced their first COVID deaths on the same day; the USA has 5 1/2 time the population and 400 times as many COVID deaths as South Korea.
Just so, you know, we don't lose sight of these facts while discussing protests and stuff.
Hello hillary lover. Be sure to go out and support blacks rioting.
So Trumpists support police murderers.

I'm not clear on what apology you're talking about. If you're referring to Bennet's commentary (linked below), it's not an apology and the main regret seems to be that the editorial staff didn't fact check more thoroughly and ask for revisions as appropriate.

We’ve examined the piece and the process leading up to its publication,” Eileen Murphy, a Times spokeswoman, said in a statement. “This review made clear that a rushed editorial process led to the publication of an Op-Ed that did not meet our standards. As a result, we’re planning to examine both short-term and long-term changes, to include expanding our fact-checking operation and reducing the number of Op-Eds we publish.”

That guy is a moron. That is who Trumpers are. Crazy. He's telling people to F of because they have signs that say "Black Lives Matter". What kind of loser do you have to be to behave that way, especially considering the circumstances in which these people are there peacefully protesting?

Protecting small business from looting and arson is not for the country?
Are you with the looters and arsonists? Or are you with the President?

Interesting that we're seeing a tiny drop in the Approval rating, but I suspect that that's normal variation--I will be really surprised if the Approval drops to the sub-40% level of earlier days.
Meanwhile the Dow continues its rise. Completely puzzling to me, but good for my funds. I'm probably going to have to withdraw some $$ later this summer anyway and will hope to do so before the markets finally bow to reality (if they *ever* will--nothing says they have to).
