Everyone know I'm a huge Kenenisa Bekele fan; however, after reading the Letsrun's Bro article concerning the GOAT of distance running. I've gave it much thought and came to disagree the GOAT isn't the three legendery runners Kenenisa Bekele, Haile, or Paul Tergat. Despite their dominance of their respective events and faster time then the person I think is GOAT. NONE have come close to this athlete's sheer brillance of versatility and dominance over 4 Olympic events, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, and 10000m.
The athlete I speak was absolutely dominant in the 1980's amassing 115 VICTORIES OUT OF 119 RACES, including the steeplechase. The defeats were against world champion Steve Cram over 1500 m, Olympic bronze medalist Alessandro Lambruschini over 3000 m steeplechase, Olympic champions Joaquim Cruz and Paul Ereng over 800 m and world champion Yobes Ondieki over 5000 m.
Can you imagine a 800m runner trying the 10000m or steeplechase and being competitive on a world class level. The person I speak of is the only athlete:
World Rank #1 at 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m, and 10000m
Only athlete to beat 4 Olymic Champions in their various specialities: Joaquim Cruz (800m), Peter Rono (1500m), John Ngugi (5000m), and Alberto Cova (10000m)
2nd sub 3:30 man
1st sub 7:30 in 3000m
1st sub 13:00 in 5000m
Only man to run sub 1:44, sub 3:30, sub 7:30, and sub 13:00
Only 5000m runner who rank # 1 and the next year drop down to the 800m and rank #1 despite being injuried and still clocked 1:43.86 with an injury that would hamper his career for 2 more years and end it in early 1990's.
When he debuted in the 10000m he ran on American Mark Nenow shoulder who destroyed all the other opposition including Alberto Cova. Then he simply sprinted away to come within 7 seconds of the then World Record in his debut and only 10000m.
World Champion 3000m
Olympic Champion 5000m
Olympic Bronze 800m
and all of his times are still world class 30 years later. He competed when the World Championships were every 4 years not every 2 years, thus he didn't have time to win as many title but his dominance is unmatched. The athlete: SAID AOUTIA (Mor)
