which is completely fine for january, especially a new professional like Murphyi assure you they'll be plenty of seasoned pros who "peter out" in the race too

As others have said, it's more than likely he won't finish near the leaders, but this is a good sign. He'll never have the speed of the top 800m specialists, and this is a good way to work on his endurance as an 800/1500 guy. I feel like a lot of runners at all levels are afraid to step out a bit like this and think it will serve him well later in the year.

He's run 1:42.93, is 87 on the all-time list of 800s, has a nasty last 100m and can run 45 point on a relay.... How can you say he will never have the speed of top 800m specialists?

Don't understand this. He has a PB of 8:18.... That's slow for college let alone the pros. Even if he improved by 25 seconds (unlikely) and runs 7:53 he'll still get crushed by probably at least 15 seconds in this race. What's the point...?
