Once the hippies took over they stopped pursuing nuclear out of fear and started pursuing more inefficient sources like wind and solar and others that didn't work very well. Nuclear fusion is the answer and the more logical progression.
It is simply not true that people had unhappier marriages. Look it up. Marriages were overall happier than today and people had better interpersonal skills. They got along with the neighbors and kids played outside.
Apart from the Internet technology leaps are much slower and fewer. Planes look largely the same. Concorde doesn't exist anymore. Trains aren't much better. Helicopter from OAK to SF doesn't exist anymore probably because the hippies thought it was wasteful.
The moon landings were much less of a waste than the climate change research that NASA spends all its time doing now.
It is impossible to have conversation with people stuck in the old days. The only nuclear plants there are is the nuclear FISSION plants. Fusion is not viable right now but should be invested in. Fission is fairly widespread but is extremely expensive to set up and logistically challenging, especially regarding waste etc. Although I suppose those damned hippies prevented us from dumping it into the sea or in children's playgrounds etc. and held back the number of fission plants we could open.
Concorde had severe problems. They didn't stop it for fun. There are engineering conundrums that have prevented mass supersonic travel from becoming mainstream. Planes 'look the same' because that's a shape that flies well and takes many passengers. Isn't that the conservative way? Leave things be if they work? Carbon fibre is massively changing the aerospace industry anyway so you simply don't know what you are talking about.
The moon landings achieved nothing. Even if you don't believe in the overwhelming evidence of climate change being man made then you can at least agree that using satellites to map the changes in ocean levels and changing landscapes in certain parts of the world is extremely useful seeing as it can predict hurricanes and tsunamis and save lives. The 1950s were great because the rest of the industrialized world was destroyed by World War II. The USA had spun up massive industry and production facilities. We built everything. Jobs were plentiful because we were exporting like crazy, and returning service members went off to college with the GI bill. We also still had plenty of cheap oil.
As the 1950s waned and the 1960s started, we started to see more competition from other industrial powers. Heck, we re-built them. Then, we started to run out of the cheapest oil and become reliant on cheap overseas oil. That led into the malaise of the 1970s, oil shocks, inflation, a war being lost in South East Asia...
Really, the "good ole days" were a product of the destruction of Germany, Japan, the UK, and many other industrial powers. Once they rebuilt their economies, ours slid. Those days aren't coming back, Gary.

50 years ago it was normal for kids to play outside or at the neighbors without constant supervision.
Next door neighbors knew each other.
In the 1950's, rates divorce, single parenthood, and crime were much lower. Families weren't addicted to welfare for multiple generations.
Energy was getting massively cheaper every year, we were making innovative leaps in transportation, health care, and technology, and we even landed on the moon.
Then, the hippie liberals took over.
Don't worry.
Divorce rate will plummet because American people will have hope for their future once again.
Crime rate will be much lower because President Trump will restore law and order.
Fewer people will be dependent on welfare because they will be so many well-paying jobs available for everyone.
Everything will be cheaper, including energy because all the regulations will be lifted and we will be extracting more coal, oil and gas than ever before.

Then I was still in the health care industry when my industry got its hands on Romneycare, and out came what you see now. The plan was better in Mass., under Romney, than it was for the US, under not just Romney, but Obama. And I assure you, it was not because of anything Obama did. It was the industry that screwed us over. Imagine that.
The Republican Party had a field day with this, because they knew it was a trainwreck, even though it was proven to work in Mass., albeit on a smaller scale.
Now they can replace it with something better. Good luck with that! There ARE market forces involved with this, and they sure ain't going to come up with something we're happy about. I mean, look at the freeking cable companies, everyone fleeing, and are they getting any better? Whatever.

Crime rates are half of what they were 25 years ago, and have been falling pretty steadily since that time. (A couple of very short and minor upticks during Bush years, but nothing that upset the overall trend.)
Obviously we'd all like to see crime rates drop even further, and if they continue their trend, that'd be great! If they just hold steady, however--and certainly if they go up!--that would be an indication of failure on DJT's part.
I personally don't think they *will* go up during Trump's term. I don't think we'll see a serious climb until the forced-to-be-born generation of unwanted children comes of age.

Republicans like the job program for their loyal voters in the midwest. Hence all the Bush programs ton encourage use. Or if you are being charitable, energy security. Liberals moved on from corn based ethanol 10-15 years ago for environmental reasons. Some still support it for the energy indepence angle
And your analogy is flawed in that the end results pollution wise are drastically different.
Clean coal and nuclear fusion belong in the same sentence. They are both things that have been talked about for 20+ years. And we are not noticeably closer now than we were then.
