She has generated more publicity for track and field in Australia and got more youngsters to start the sport than almost any other member of the Australian Olympic team, including the lone medalist (in the walking race). The federation should applaud and pay her for the PR work she has done for them. She's young, healthy, university educated, fun-loving, and making good money. Plus, she makes our sport look fun and sexy. One or two crusty old-farts with outdated views on sport/individual lifestyle choices and an Olympic coach that failed miserably might have complained, but here in Australia she's seen as good role model.
Good points, but the thing is, from the Athletics Australia point of view, like all government-funded entities they have to show results to justify their funding. For athletics it's medals, finalist, semifinalists, etc. Followers and hits on webpages and popularity don't really work in this regard. In any case, all the good she does off the track is as a result of having the platform created by performing on the track. Performing on the track has to be the priority and all the other stuff not only will follow, but old school coaches could not possibly criticize her for not performing.
