on a large team, top JV runner, nothing special but
i ran badly at my first 2 meets but got better the 3rd one and ran well with a lot of guys that beat me by a lot before and beat some... now coach is having me do tempos slower than guys i beat by a minute and 20 seconds slower than guys i beat... 6:30 tempos for a 18 min 5k.. does that make sense? Guys who didn't break 20 are dong 6:45's.. am i wrong to be annoyed that im going slower than i should be or should i just trust in his training?
How long are the tempos? Because 18:40ish is 6:00/mi so 6:30/mi for a tempo pace isnt about right. He might be getting it wrong for some people but yours seems right to me.
I would rather you trust your coach. Everyone responds differently to the same type of training. Your coach has probably realized through analysis of your training and racing that you perform better if you run your tempos a little slower than the other guys. It could be that fast-paced tempos and workouts makes you worn-out by race day, I don't know. Just follow his guidance and after several weeks and races, you will be able to tell if what he is suggestion is helping your race results or not. Good luck.
okay, i think youre right, its odd though bc he doesnt seem like he pays much attention like he tells me to run with guys doing 6:10 which is more where i am in terms of place but then says 6:30, i guess the best thing to do is to hit the paces and earn the right to run faster paces by showing that i am capable of it.
Why can't you ask your coach? If he is knowledgable and knows what he's doing he will give you a good reason.

That kind of approach could even give you an edge to beat the guys doing 6:10 tempos during actual race. Just be patient and see what happens. If after three - four weeks, this doesn't work, your coach may prescribe a different approach. His/Her only interest is to make you better and therefore you should not be too worried. And in any case, as the poster above suggested, you should have a discussion with him/her.
