I don't know how important family connections are anymore getting into an elite school, but Ledecky has those. They care about things beyond academics and being the best female swimmer in the world is fairly interesting. Even if she wasn't swimming in the NCAA, I'm sure the swim coach would be thrilled to have her training with the team, that would help recruiting.

So I don't think Ledecky needed to be on the swim team to get into Stanford.
