Genetically, yes, in terms of running. Both parents are excellent runners. Mom at 800, dad at 5k.

Enjoyed the video tremendously.
Didn't miss the moves due to commercial, field event, or some sappy background story.
How was he talented? I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you. And Bill Bowerman did not necessarily say Salazar wasn't talented. Bowerman said Salazar was one only two or three athletes he ever saw who were like "bumble bees". He looked at them and saw no reason to think they should run at a high level, but they did anyway. Kenny Moore was the other. Speaking for myself, I don't know a lot about form. But for me, Salazar was ugly to watch. Other Duck legends of his time like Chapa, Centrowitz, and McChesney looked so much more talented. To me Salazar was great out of sheer will and determination on almost a freakish level. If Prefontaine had been alive when Salazar came on the scene I'm confident even he would have lectured Salazar to tone it down with all the volume and leaving it all on the track.
Where was Doug Padilla? He was quite a 2 mile runner and a 3:56 miler by this time?
Ryan,
Karel Lismont, Belgian Silver Medalist to Shorter in 1972 or one of the best Emil Zatopek, were not pretty, but effective. How about Pat Peterson? Or in the sprints Michael Johnson? The full package is physical, psychological and the will to succeed.

Sorry to disagee with you, but It is unusual. He only trains kickers. He knows how to be a front runner but does train anyone that does that. Hasay used to be a front runner, but Salazar changed her ways. That is unusual.
Every day Salazar remembers being out-kicked in Eugene by an out-of-shape Henry Rono.
