yeah i was an average 4:23 9:38 guy of decent mileage (60-65 a week or so) in hs and have been running on and off for the last few years since them and am going to give it a serious run over the next few years. Think my chances are decent?

Only thing consistent about the 4 years was average weekly training of 100 - 120 miles (sometimes higher), and pushing the limits by training with much better/accomplished runners. I also ran many races over various distances during this period, and I think the experience pays off in the marathon. As for a background in running beforehand, I was a soccer player for over 15 years (playing briefly at a level just below MLS). Before running my first marathon, I probably got up to ~60 miles/week and had run a few 10ks.
If you are conservative in your training, the progress will be more gradual. But you may more likely to remain injury-free, which is of course also key to getting better.

sophomore year in college after XC season (25:50 PR) we went over to Topeka for marathon. We ran around 75 mile per week. I tagged along with only a 15 mile long run, first half talking and 1:30, then at 18 miles legs got real tired, finishing walking/jogging last 3 miles

5 years later with marathon load of 75 to 90 miles per week
2:21:21, only faded the last 5 miles
