Can't agree more with figs. Figs are amazing and then they are gone.
Also I'd say Pomelo is very underrated fruit - in fact so underrated that my spell check doesn't even recognize the name

I know it sounds kind of weird but I visited SF last year at the height of CA fig season and the coffee shop near where I was staying had a breakfast special of cottage cheese topped with figs and balsamic vinegar. I had it every morning after the first day I tried it. With a strong coffee, probably my favorite post-run meal ever.
If you are a real athlete, real butter is good for you and you need it.
4% fat cottage cheese. I was never a cottage cheese fan, but all of a sudden I crave it and it tastes so good now.
Figs are great, the like one month of a year (unless you live in CA) you can find them for under $6 a lb.
Persimmons are really good in the fall. The ones they sell in the store are crap and not ripe and an unripe persimmon is the worst food in the world. But I found some persimmon trees on one of my run routes so I had them for a month or so last year.
Also acai really should be more popular, but the price probably keeps people from trying it.
Papaya
A Chipoltle chicken burritto (is the perfect meal)
Eggs
Dates
Pumpkin pie
Tuna fish sandwich with kimchi on it
If you have a Korean market near you, they usually stock dried persimmons, which are amazing. I've heard the Japanese version is even better but I haven't been able to find them.
Potatoes! Boil them, mash them, stick them in a stew -- lovely big golden chips with a nice piece of fried fish.
Chick peas!!
