The Olympics brings much more fame, money, and attention to the sport than the world championships do.
The olympics don't do diddly squat. Elites are paid next to nothing and what they do get is for knob-slobbering Nike.
They actually reduce attention by focusing it on three weeks every four years and nothing else. Of course no ordinary people watch Worlds. They don't even know it exists.
This is true of all sports rooted in olympic competition, for example no ordinary person knows when the FINA world championships are, or if there is one. Only independent sports with their own pro roots thrive outside the olympics. Tennis, soccer, boxing, basketball and so forth.
Another reason to quit the olympics is it has become a freak show of marginal joke sports like synchronized swimming and rhythmic gymnastics. They deliberately push sports people don't know instead of ones they do. Little wonder track has become one they don't know.
