I've lost two cyclist friends who were killed by drunk drivers.
I just purchased a Bionic Runner. I put trail tires on it and am only riding trails and paths. No roads. No cars.

I only ride my bike on separate bike paths, not bike paths that are just lines on the side of a road that idiots go highway speeds on....
Total horse sh*t, let me ride my bike in the fcking bike lane without being worried about stupid mfker junkies killing me, please.
I drove by the Jay Rd / 28th St intersection on Saturday around when this happened and saw several police cars stopped with their lights on. I was also passed by an ambulance heading towards the scene. Sad for his family and friends. The driver sounds like a horribly irresponsible person, to say the least.
A very similar incident happened 4 years ago at almost the same spot. It occurred at the Violet Ave / 28th St intersection. Local pro Adrien Herzog's fiance was struck by a car while he was cycling and was killed. I remember a temporary memorial at the scene being erected, an all white bike.
BTW, worth mentioning also is the amount of sissy princesses in this thread who don't ride road bikes anymore because they're afraid of getting killed. The stats can't be that bad.

Why did they get rid of the all white bike?

I don't think it was anything official. Someone just put a bike there in his memory. I actually found the article about it with a picture of the bike included:
http://www.dailycamera.com/ci_21145920/boulder-runner-terence-t-j-doherty-dies-fromI remember always seeing the bike when I drove on 28th st towards downtown but I had no idea what it was for until 2 years later when someone posted about him being killed here and I connected the dots.
I had an uncle killed by a car full of 16 year old kids when he was running in a community park with the speed limit of 15 mph. They where doing 90+ when then struck him and dragged him for 400 feet under their car. The driver lost his license for 12 months. My 2 year old and 2 month old cousins lost their father forever.

This is why I would never bike or run again (I used to when I was a teenager) on roads with cars. In the linked story, they mention two other cyclists killed recently by cars in the same readership area.
Sucks. The driver of that car needs to be put away for life. It IS appropriate though to have the discussion that it just is not safe to run or bike on roads with cars. Doesn't matter if there's a lane or not or if you have the right or not. Collisions with cars are unforgiving. I have the right to drink myself into a stupor every day if I want, but I don't do that.
This position is still ignorant. Many Americans have no choice! It's either run or bike in bike lanes or not at all. Most suburban sprawl cities have little to no trail options. Instead of just not doing it, you should be arguing for the immediate construction of rail trails and greenways throughout North America. We're facing an obesity crisis for crying out loud, and telling people its too dangerous to exercise outside isn't going to solve it.

Lot's of hand-wringing in this thread but flagpole has inadvertently pointed out the real problem--so long as we live in a culture that extols drinking alcohol as an acceptable, or even desirable pastime and so long as we make the public policy choice that the alleged societal good of being able to legally drink alcohol outweighs it's harm to society, we'll always be reading about deaths by drunk drivers and we'll always be at risk of becoming the victims of drunk drivers.
I reject your position. We have the freedom in this country to live in any part of it that we choose. I have chosen specific places to live in the past based on many factors, including easy access to running areas. Crying obesity doesn't make it smart or safe to ride a bike on a road with cars...cars that have potential drunk drivers, potential distracted drivers, potential bad drivers, potential drivers who have a medical emergency, and on and on. And, I didn't say people shouldn't exercise outside. I said they shouldn't do so where there are cars. There's a whole lot of outside that doesn't include cars. I remain confused anyway about why someone who wants to exercise (run or bike) would want to do so while breathing in a bunch of car exhaust. My position is correct. You just want convenience; either that or you just want to stick it to people because you have a right to bike on a road because there is a bike lane there. Silly.
Rail trails and green ways FTW!!!

Here in Lexington KY, we've had two cyclists killed by drivers on country roads in the last year or so -- one by a drunk mexican (will go to prison), and one by a distracted rich woman (will be inconvenienced).
