Hello,
I am in a unique situation where I happen to know a lot of people who are always ready and willing to bet against me in any sport/athletic type competition. I have previously won thousands in these type of events in things like ping pong, pool, basketball, etc. I am the type of person who played a lot of sports/games growing up and I'm pretty decent at all of them, though certainly not great at any of them.
Well, people are always offering to bet me in things like running. I know a decent amount about running and I know I am more towards the slow twitch fiber muscles and I'm almost 34 years old so I know better than to challenge anyone to short distances.
I will be competing against people who are probably in their late 20s who typically "train" by running 5 miles once per week, surfing 1-2 times per week, etc... nothing hardcore.
Everyone knows I'm ludicrously out of shape right now thanks to the basketball challenge I suffered through this weekend (I won but i was seriously dragging).
I'd like to strike while the iron is hot. I've ordered a fitbit and some running shoes. I know cardiovascular is the fastest of the adaptative systems so I'd like to train with precise diet/exercise and within the next 6-8 weeks be ready to put up a seriously impressive running time that there is no way someone else can match who hasnt mirrored my training.
I'm about 6'0 155 lbs so I won't need any extreme weight loss plans or anything, I really just need to select the perfect distance that I can train for in that amount of time. I will plan to race in the middle of August on the hottest day imaginable so that training plays as large a role possible.
What is the perfect distance for this type of contest? Bear in mind I plan for there to be a minimum of $2,000 bet on this event and it could possibly go as high as $5,000 so sticking to an exact diet/training schedule won't be an issue as long as I can successfully prevent injury.
What type of things should i be considering? A 5k? A mile?
I was thinking perhaps there is an absolutely perfect type of race I could train for that will really attack them...something like Best 2 of 3 races in a 5k with exactly 15 minutes recovery between each race.
Be creative, I'd like to find the exact race that will punish anyone who hasn't trained exactly for that type of aerobic/anaerobic capacity, recovery time, heat conditions, etc. Something I have virtually no chance of losing against a relatively untrained runner.
I'd also like to get this done extremely quickly as people know I am out of shape right now and won't believe the rapid improvement I can make in just a few weeks. It won't be a problem for me to look out of shape, fake getting drunk every night, etc based on my reputation in order to get the maximum amount wagered against me.
