Why do I see all of these threads from high schoolers about preparing for XC already? Is the track season really over in the US? Our season is just beginning and doesn't finish until late August.

It is designed so that track season ends within a couple of week of the end of the school year. I agree that a season shifted later would be nice, but the link with schools makes this not really possible.
It all makes sense now! In England, all of our track clubs are not affiliated with schools so we don't have that problem
What you don't have any of in the UK: The weather forecast for the California High School State Championships is 105F. May is already too hot in Texas (high of 89F in Dallas, Texas today). Unless you're living on the Pacific Coast, it's too hot to train hard in many places, even if you're a sprinter or thrower.
It's a good thing it ends sooner too. Much of the US is very hot in July and August.
And really it doesn't end, non school based track clubs complete through July at least.
That is a very valid point, I didn't really take that into consideration baring in mind our track and field meets are wet and windy even in July!
