And that's the truth
I would check again about thinking no one dislikes the Beach Boys. Personally I agree that they are good and even great. And at the very least you wouldn't think anyone would hate him. But I have a couple friends who oddly have gone out of their way to tell me they hate the Beach Boys. I also recall an interview with Pete Townsend who said he hated them. The Who covered a Beach Boy song but only because Daltrey and Keith Moon loved them. Townsend only grudgingly played along according to him.

It's really Pavement, The Cure, Talking Heads- ya know, indie stuff. But for the sake of being relatable, I go with the standard answer of The Beach Boys. No one dislikes The Beach Boys.

LOL .. youtube Vinnie Colauita, Terry Bozzio, Steve Gadd, Bela Fleck, Mike Brecker, Wic Wooten, Oteil Burbridge, Jaco Pistorius, Chuck Rainey, Keith Jarrett, Dennis Chamberlain, Virgil Donati, Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas, Mark O'Connor, Chris Cornell .... oh, and Stevie Wonder. Songwriters? Dylan isn't too bad, check him out. Or the Beatles, they were from England.
... R&B and soul singers are skilled but emotive, making them as unbearable as opera or gospel. ..
You prefer unemotive singers? Seems to me artists, whether skillful or not, should express emotion.
This thread is timely.
Bob Mould's latest solo album (Patch the Sky) was released yesterday. I first heard Husker Du in 83/84 when I was fifteen.
My wife actively dislikes the Beach Boys. We went and saw the movie about Brian Wilson and she liked the movie - but she still can't take the Beach Boys' music. How someone could dislike "God Only Knows" or "Good Vibrations" is beyond me, but I still love her just the same.
I usually answer "alternative and indie rock" because it is a pretty broad term that covers most of what I like. More specifically I like indie and art rock but I'd look too pretentious saying that and the term "alternative and indie rock" covers that.
If whoever I'm talking to seems interested I'll continue and say some of my favorite bands are Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, Portishead, and Deerhunter. If they show more interest I'll talk about my favorite albums by those bands or some other bands who I'm listening to at the moment. It's always cool to get to share your musical taste with someone else.
Weirdly enough, not many people on college campuses seem to listen to indie/art rock which is kind of disappointing.
If its an attractive girl asking, DON'T say heavy metal. Say Supertramp or Lionel Richie (or modern day equivalents whatever they are),

Emoting is displaying inappropriate or exaggerated emotion, like a bad actor.
Band: Tool. Genre: Metal. That's what I say and that's reality.
They ask me what I listen to and I tell them Caleb Ndiku.
HEAVY METAAAAAAAAL BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jurgen Klinsmann.
To answer your question...my favorite music is the one that stirs my soul, the one that makes me want to sway and move to the beat. It's the music that makes me want to cut loose on a dance floor, the music that allows me to express myself...

Back when NYC had a Diamond League meet. I was standing with Jenn Suhr after the meet listening to the Reggae band swayin', headbobbin' foot shufflin' and such. We both pretty much were doin' the white kids don't have rhythm dance. When she asked me if I like Reggae I said no I don't normally listen to it but it is infectious live. She said yup it is. And that's my I dance with Jen Suhr story.

Nah, not a lie, you misunderstand me... I DO like PJ & most of the 90's grunge stuff a lot... It is my teenage stuff, so close to my heart... If I don't have have music handy, I will pine for some Jeremy, or some Lithium by Nirvana, or some Green Day... But, when I actually have the iPod handy, I am more likely to turn on Anna Begins, or Some Better than Ezra, or something like that...
What what in the butt is great, tho, lolol
I will also tell people "90s Rock" then listen to Taylor Swift on my way to work!
As I've gotten older I'll pretty much listen to anything but will always stop the radio on a good rock song.

Any discussion around music and musicians using the name "Tony Williams" has to be referencing the drummer, or you're automatically DQed.
... or Roy Orbison.
Roy was nice, but he wasn't even worth the spittle that accumulated on Stevie's mic.
Emoting is displaying inappropriate or exaggerated emotion, like a bad actor.
One thing Stevie Wonder is not is a bad actor. Nor inappropriate. Nor exaggerated. Music flows from the man like it does from very few people.
I do agree with the over the top vocal gymnastics we hear in so much contemporary R&B .. but Stevie is on another level. He sings the way he sings because that's who he is. Anything other than that would be dishonest.
Oh .. and my bad above, I meant Dennis Chambers.
