In an attempt to raise Rupp's chances of making the team, Alberto clones 2 other Rupps, there is much controversy about the NOP again using a gray area to cheat, however the USATF allows all three Rupps to compete. During the race all three Rupps set out at WR pace in an effort to break the other two and determine who is the real Rupp, all three end up falling apart at mile 18 and none of the Rupps make the team.

I just hopped on this thread expecting to find it full of praise for me saying in December that Rupp would run the Trials and World Indoors. Maybe you guys missed it. Yeah, well you can have a lot more people compete on a road marathon course than a track 10000. The IOC likes to have athletes from many different countries and this is a good way to include little guys without getting in the way.

Rooting for Ward too. I was hoping Rupp wouldn't hop in for that reason lol. We'll see how it goes, Ward has shown potential and will be a contender for that 3rd spot.

I don't think the top marathoners are going to be too worried. Sure they wish Rupp was not there, but they have been to 22 miles before and they know he has not. It is not like Rupp can run 20 miles at 2:10 pace then just rattle off his usual 10k. The experienced marathoners just need to keep the pace realistic for them and then make a strong move at 22 or 23 miles and see if Rupp can handle it. Maybe he can, maybe not. Even Rupp does not know for sure.

I think Rupp would benefit from a slower pace, but the others will not let that happen. Much depends on whether Rupp is going for the win or for 3rd place. I don't like his chances against Meb or Ritz. I do think he has good chances against the others. If Ritz goes out hard but Meb holds back for the big finish, the tactics get very complicated. Another runner might start pressing Rupp to try to hurt him early and Meb will be waiting to make a big charge like he did in London.

You really need 3+ guys to make a break for it to be interesting. If 1 guy goes out at Sub 2:08 pace Rupp can let him go and hang with the 2:10 pack. Then either run the break away down over the last 10k or coast in to make the team.
