what, was she tweeting while competing? I'll have to read that.
I have to admit some athletes that were heavy on social media are doing way better now that they've cut back. Not mentioning any names, but I'm sure LRC knows who they are.

How did social media almost cost her the medal? Was she too busy tweeting instead of training or something? She doesn't really clarify it.

Can you imagine the uproar if USATF had considered such an action?

The article says many people thought they would do a ban as they had previously hinted they'd urge people to “tweet or compete†after a swimmer famously said it cost her Olympic gold in 2012. -

The silver medallist wept uncontrollably after failing to take gold as she was caught in a post-race twirl of emotions and she later claimed she had lost her focus.
"I don't know, I just felt like I didn't really get off social media and get into my own head," she said.
"I guess when you swim that fast in the heat, then people put pressure and more pressure on you, saying 'Oh, you're going to get the gold'," she said after the race.
"Maybe I just started believing that and just thought I'd already won by the time I had swum and I hadn't even swum yet. -
There is growing anecdotal evidence that frequently using social media adversely effects an athlete's performance. Lots of coaches have been cracking down on their athlete's use of social media.
-
Lots use social media to market themselves and their sponsor.
My .02 -
Yes, some high profile athletes know how to use social media in moderation to market themselves and their sponsors in a tasteful way. There also must be consultants working with the athletes, teaching them the best ways to use social media. The agents likely employ such consultants to work with their athletes.

LRC ruined my running career.

Also, in Australia we have something called the 'tall poppy syndrome', we love it and social media is tailor made for it, some people deserve it some don't.

Seebohm made some really childish public excuses for getting touched out instead of just being gracious with a silver. Of course, she's having a great year now; looks like she'll have a great chance at gold at the next olympics, but there's no way Missy Franklin would blame twitter for the loss. -
Social media can be a negative environment for an athlete if they perform bad, or make a notable mistake, or even if they say something that's not politically correct. Hundreds of people who hide behind their computers can act all tough and harass the athlete with numerous negative comments at any opportunity they see. It happens everyday, unfortunately. Its funny how lesser individuals look to put down great people when they do something wrong. I guess they're just flaunting their own insecurities, and happy that the great athlete has supposedly stooped down to their level for a moment in time.

As long as they don't get in the way of Michelle Jenneke posting videos then I really don't care. -
IMO, it's not like Seebholm has ever been a particular class act by swimming standards (which granted, tend to be on the overly polite side of things) so her blaming twitter for her loss is consistent with other things she's said in the past.

Is your name Alan Webb? -
Yea I agree. She's only got 2 former world records, 4 Olympic Medals and 15 World Championship medals. No class to her swimming capabilities at all.

You seem to be confused as to the difference in meaning between "class act" and "accomplished".
Try looking them up. -

Yes, why not name names? I don't use social media much. I don't know whom you are referring to. -
