And one of the nicest guys who were that good I ever met.
He lost the Big 10 outdoor 1500 his senior year when he was by far the best 1500 runner. He ran a 3:54 mile in Canada the summer before and he was the only sub-4 runner in the race. Instead of focusing on his race he spent the first 1200 actually talking encouragement to two Indiana freshman (Mark Deady and Jim White) and ended up getting outkicked in a 3:45 race to Bob Mau of Northwestern.
NCAA 5000 in Indy he blasted a 25.0 last 200 in a 13:55 race to win. I have the CBS video tape where I went from third to last in the last lap. I think I ran a 70. Once he hit the 200 to go mark he put the hammer down. Craig Masback was the TV commentator and called it a "bold, authoritative move".
Indiana runner during a time when many major meets where held Indianapolis and the timing was right.
Very down to earth guy, Never acted like a big shot and I remember talking to him at length (knowing I was from Ohio) about Native American burial mounds. I think he was history major.
My favorite story about Brahm was one my teammate told me. Brahm was a 1500 runner that moved up to 5000. That was the Sam Bell philosophy. And all the 1500 runners in the Big 10 always were entered in the 5000 after running the semi the day before and the final. Few of them ever finished.
My teammate had a rough race and stated "I think everybody except my mother beat me" and Terry Brahm replied "I think your mother was right ahead of me".
