these numbers alone explain why running will always be a niche sport in this country. God knows they’ve only continued to rise with “COVID weight” people miraculously have been able to pack on while getting ice cream DoorDash delivery and watching Netflix for the last 2 years.
This guy gets it. "Average" is a misleading measurement for a study like this one because there will be a significant percent who can't run 10 meters and maybe 0.01% who can run >10 miles at 7:30 pace. Median is a better metric. I'd put the median at less than 200 meters... maybe only 100 meters. 200 meters at 7:30 pace is running nonstop for 52.5 seconds. That's a long time to run for a non-athlete.
Posters here are runners and routinely overestimate the fitness of the general population in these "how fast could a xx year old run YY meters" questions. 200 meters at 7:30 pace is running nonstop for 52.5 seconds. That's a long time to run for a non-athlete.
A study would probably produce a long-tail bell curve with the majority bunched between 0 and 200 meters and maybe 1-2% who could run for more than a mile at 7:30 pace.
