UW is ranked abobe USC by Shanghai, which is what most counselors use these days.

US News and World Report ranks USC #23 in the nation, and University of Washington is #52.
This year's average SAT score for incoming USC freshmen was 2075. The average SAT score for University of Washington incoming freshmen was 1815.
I have no dog in this fight. But it looks like USC is a better school than Washington. And I would guess that a degree from USC carries more weight around this country, and internationally.

ARWU 2015 ranks: UW #15, USC #49
http://www.shanghairanking.com/ARWU2015.htmlUSC has advanced academically quickly and significantly in the past two decades. Having said that, they accept a disproportionate number of "legacy admits" which is well known and diminishes the value of their undergraduate degrees outside of Southern California.
Specific to the SAT scores, they "game" them in order to achieve those figures. For example, special admits (i.e.: athletes) are not included in this figure. They also only report admissions stats for the fall semester, which is significant because the aforementioned legacy admits who are academically deficient (often substantially), are not accounted for as they are admitted in the spring semester if they are significantly below the mean.
Final point, the US News + World Reports rankings place a heavy emphasis on endowments and annual giving in their calculations, both of which have nothing to do with the quality of instruction of the end product. They are biased.

The L.A. Times also obtained over 800 pages of receipts and expense reports from Sarkisian’s time at Washington, which were loaded with alcohol purchases. In June of 2011 he paid a $722.52 bill — which included 83 beers and 12 shots of vodka — at 10:16 a.m. at a Washington golf resort; he rang up a $1,600 tab over two days at a hotel’s poolside bar in 2013; and he ordered 91 shots of tequila during two visits to a restaurant, racking up a $1,023 bill.
Damn.
Head coaches often pick up the tab for everyone. They don't always travel alone...
