I am a 19 year old college kid, and I was arrested last Thursday outside of a liquor store in Georgetown. The charge is something like "misrepresentation of age to enter an ABC establishment," which is a misdemeanor.
This is my question. The cop who arrested me told me that what would probably happen is that I would go to court, be given community service, and upon completion, the case would be expunged. I have heard numerous stories from friends about this happening to kids my age who commit minor crimes involving alcohol and weed.
However, I had a brief conversation with an attorney yesterday, and he said it isn't always this straightforward. It may be the case that I go in and am immediately given an opportunity to get it expunged, but it also might be more difficult, in which case having an attorney could make the difference.
I guess I am wondering if paying 700-1000 dollars for an attorney will actually change the outcome, verses me just going in alone. My main concern is that I will be convicted, and it will go on my record.
