Mountains should be named after famous locals. I suggest Mt. Palin.
I mounted Palin. She was a freak.
It's not a left-right issue you morons.
It became a battle between Ohio (McKinley's home) and Alaska (where Denali sits).
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R) re-filed legislation in February to rename the mountain Denali, Sen. Dan Sullivan (R) and Gov. Bill Walker (I) each promptly sent out news releases praising the move. Even Representative Don Young (R, in Congress for 43 years and counting) supported the change.
I'm trying to figure out why conservatives care at all about the name change. Conservatives don't like national parks and only hold public land in contempt. They are all about states rights and Alaska is behind the name change overwhelmingly. So, why do you even care? Its just a paperwork exercise on the part of the government.
And what exactly was the good reason for naming it McKinley?

You obviously read neither the comments in this thread nor the article. Please read before posting.
And without googling, please the 5 most significant accomplishments of McKinley's administration. Can you even name one?
And then realize the mountain was named McKinley before he was president to support one of his political positions.
I don't think most conservatives are opposed to the change.
For those rogues that are, it's probably the usual partisan rhetoric. "If Obama is for it, I'm against it."

Don't need to Google because I listened to NPR this morning. McKinley won us the war against the Spanish, and greatly helped the Philippines. He supported the gold standard over the Ponzi scheme enabling Federal Reserve we have today. He was assassinated and his legacy was overshadowed by the Bull Moose, but hew was a great president and Ohioans should be proud he came from their state.
And you're wrong, it was named after him in 1917. The dude in 1890's was half joking.

Wait. We're renaming it for an SUV? That's worse than McKinley.
