I think I have a better grasp of Arthur's philosophy from my time with him and Barry Magee than most people do. I have no idea if you and I can approach this question intelligently. For one thing, I don't see an actual question. For another, why would we even want to? We each believe what we believe. I think you're naive but I'm not going to change your mind, you aren't going to change mine, and I don't care enough about what you believe to bother trying.
I don't think that you or the other so-called Lydiardists on this message board understand Lydiard's philosophy. He didn't believe in drugs did he? He was right and you are wrong. You and most others are completely brainwashed on this subject. You don't understand how the body produces all the 'performance enhancers' it needs naturally.
How can I be naive when I am the one pointing this stuff out, and you are the one denying it? What I told you about the brain controlling both the supply and demand for oxygen for example. Who in the world of physiology is examining these facts? Who in the world of exercise physiology is even looking holistically at the subject? Almost no-one it's almost all reductionism, not holism. All your received wisdom is nothing but pseudoscience for this reason.
Can you or Nobby or Kelsall, even relate to these points? No, you just immediately dismiss them. I am not saying that Lydiardism is a cult, I am saying that almost everyone has this almost religiously dogmatic approach to the subject of so called 'Performance Enhancing Drugs' that is unquestioning belief. So who is naive?
Lydiard got this, you guys don't. You don't really understand or follow his philosophy. Whatever people say about his methods being outdated ignores his philosophy which is, was and always will be a truly enlightened understanding of athleticism and the psychology of sport.
Ladies and gentlemen, the president of morans R us.
Arthur never denied that PEDs work. Obviously you still need talent and good training. If you've got a quote from Arthur on the topic I'd be interested in seeing it, but he really was not paying detailed attention to the top level of the sport by the time EPO came along. Again, neither of us is going to change the other's mind so why bother with this?
"I have a saying 'train, don't strain.' The Americans have the saying 'no pain, no gain' and that's why they have no distance running champions. They get down to the track with a stopwatch and flog their guts out thinking that it'll make them a champion, but they'll never make a champion that way."

Lydiard said that if he had coached Jim Ryun, that Ryun would still have the world record in the mile-- at a lecture at the U of O.
Lydiard must have been as dumb as ventolin then.
From Running to the Top: "James Fixx said sexuality is invariably heightened for both men and women when they get into shape through running. Well, I wouldn't be too sure about that; I question whether any man gets an erection every morning simply because he runs. And a lot of men who are by no means fit are pretty good at sex".

And I did. Met him at a talk in Boulder. We had a common acquaintance. He invited me and my colleagues out for a beer after his talk. Great time!
Why didn't he come to Colorado Springs? Is it because it's a redneck dump?
