Hey! I'm super happy to see this because I really would like the OPTION to go into medical school but still do something I'm very interested in. So for this, how did you go about taking those prerequisites? Did you have to request to add those classes in? Did you take them during the summer? Which classes did you have to take? and was it only for one year? Thanks!!!
The vast majority of medical school's require gen chem 1 & 2, intro bio 1 & 2, orgo chem 1 & 2, and physics 1 & 2. In addition biochemistry is strongly recommended for MCAT and necessary for some medical schools. Overall, it'll take most undergraduates 2 years to fit it in the timeline but it could theoretically be done in 1 year if you take them back to back and with orgo 1 and orgo 2 in the summer (6 weeks each).
You have to take the MCAT. This also requires an understanding of psychology and sociology. Anatomy and physiology is also important.
Find a major with a lot of elective space, and make time for relatively tough classes. You will also have to study content outside of your class content in order to do well on MCAT. My recommendation is to take the intro biology classes your first year and everything else in year 2 and 3 if you still want to go the medicine route.
But yes, you can major in whatever you want. But ultimately you should focus a lot of your time in the sciences if you want to go to medical school.
Read about major pathways on the AAMC's official website. Don't waste time here; I could be lying to you for all you know.
