The guys you see walking around with gallons of water are generally serious weight lifters - and some serious weight lifter wanna bees. They do this to stay hydrated during their workout. They will generally have workouts that last two plus hours at times and subscribe to the very sound physiological precept that you should hydrate every 15 minutes or so during a workout.
Lets say their workout was 3 hours long - in that 3 hours you are saying they will lose a gallon of water (sweating and breathing) for which they will need to re-hydrate by drinking a gallon of water? 1.3 liters/hour? That's a serious amount of sweat. Almost unbelievable.
Look - I agree they are drinking water to hydrate - the choice of container is specifically a "look" thing and that's why they carry water in a gallon jug. It's to show that they are serious and real while other people at the gym are posers and don't work out hard enough to need a gallon of water.
I see a lot of the men and women show up with the jugs, often they are only half full - it's a look, that's all.
