Yeah, last year NBN was the same weekend as the Dream Mile.

This year, they went up against Brooks.

Not a good couple of years for NBN... but then again, what can they do? A week earlier is still State Meet season; a week later is US Junior Nationals. Any later than that is probably too far removed from the rest of the season. Seems like they are going to come in second no matter what they do (not that that is the end of the world for them... there are still good athletes there and they are still getting good attendance, it's just not THE meet anymore).

Nbn stated like brooks, "get the best kids together." Now it is just a huge money maker with emerging elites, freshmen and every relay thinkable to gain more entry fees.

Take the pole vault, for example. The blue mats are absolutely filthy and the cover is just rolled off and tossed to the edge of the pit. The flagging is red for a while and then switches to multi-colored.

For a meet this big they should purchase a NB Nationals cover to place over the college's regular mats. Buying a new set of matching flags every year should also be easy.

NC A&T is not a pretty complex by any stretch of the imagination, the 1st year we (parents) went we were shocked. It does appear the track was resurfaced this year - if you look at previous years pictures the track was a lighter colored blue

I like NSSF meets, especially NBIN in New York, which is also has many moneymaking relays (such as EE 4x2 and SMR) but is also in a destination city. I thought the same about Boston--enjoyed it both times I went. I have been to NBON in Greensboro--not a destination city, but can be a very good meet. Essentially, though, it's a VA/NY dual meet with some other East Coast states thrown in as well as OH and MI.

I've long thought the best solution to that meet is to have it during the school season and get NFHS sanction. Find a meet that wants to do that--Arcadia? Texas Relays?--and pour the resources into that. No, it wouldn't come during what we might call Championship Season, but it would be a meet worth putting together a peak performance for, much as guys do for Arcadia 3200.

I agree with the first paragraph (the idea of Emerging Elite is silly- if you aren't top 50 in the nation, you shouldn't be at the NATIONAL meet). But I disagree with the next paragraph. A championship meet should be during the championship season. It's not a championship time trial.

I wish NB was willing to make the meet an actual national meet by having stricter entrance standards or flying talented relay teams in. Instead we this east coast meet plus Ohio and Michigan, as you were saying. But for now we will just have kids saying "I'm 4th in the nation", when they really mean ten states.

I don't see that ever happening, for several reasons. Because state meets begin early in some Southern states and end late in some Northern states, there's no really good time to get all of the best relays together in one place. And a distance kid who took a state title in mid-May has to keep racing for a month after that in order to make it to Greensboro--a tough task.

I see what you're saying about a time trial--that's true, to some extent. However, the NFHS is explicit in saying they don't want a true national championship in any high school sport, so that's probably the best we will get. Take a meet that's already great and put resources into travel, and maybe you'll get an approximation of a championship. Truly, it's not going to get any better than that, if you asked me.

Ah I see. I'm only familiar with a few states' championship schedule, so I didn't really know that some states only go until mid-May. Forgive my ignorance. And yeah, because of reasons like that a true national HS championship will never happen.

You mentioned something about NFHS being strict about not having a championship. I've never heard of that, what is that about?

Boys mile champ was from Virginia (East Coast).

Boys two-mile champ was from Texas.

Boys 5000 champ was from South Dakota.

Boys 4x8 was from NJ (East Coast), 4xMile was from NY (East Coast), DMed was from Michigan.

Six distance events, six states represented among the winners. Certainly an east coast bias (since travel is more affordable) but also strong representation from the west ...
