I'm a hs coach considering starting a side gig doing private coaching to make some extra $. There aren't any rules in my contract explicitly forbidding this but I am wondering what the ethics are of coaching one team and then doing private coaching for other prep runners who may eventually compete against my guys. Anyone have experiences with this? Has it worked out? Has it not worked out?
Yes, that would be a very tricky situation indeed. I would suggest trying to coach adults to avoid the issue.
Here is a problem I see: you coach City High but during the summer you coach runners from around town that will run against your team. You are being paid by the school and the individuals. You learn the weaknesses of the individuals you coach and then use that information to help your team win--well you just screwed over people paying you. The flipside could also occur.
I am sure there are folks out there coaching high school and then club teams but it could get tricky. Either way you could potentially be raising questions. Seems like a no win scenario.
