Track season is steadily coming to a close. While there are still a couple of weeks left, I can't help but start a thread. Cross Country fever came early! It'll surely be an interesting year for XC in the 'CAC: nearly every team is losing some pretty big guns. The crown is up for grabs, that much is certain. Below I've listed a very early prediction list (in no particular order...partially) of potential top 5 teams vying for the NESCAC title. I'm curious to hear others' thoughts on the matter as well, so post away!
Top Contenders for 2015
1. Williams College (1st at NESCAC 2014, 4th D3 Regionals '14, 6th at NCAA)
Top returners:
Bijan Mazaheri '16 (24:23 @ NCAA)
Ben Decker '18 (25:30 @ CAC's & NCAA)
Todd Ford '16 (25:21 @ NCAA, 3:50 1500m)
Kyle Kistinger '16 (26:18 at CAC's)
Williams takes a bit of a hit with losing Cotton, Inde, Townsend and Siegel, but more than make up for it with Farwell's tried-and-true coaching and recruiting. Bijan had a stellar cross season and track season (sub 30 10K) and will definitely contend for the title. The Ephs are always able to consistently recruit a bevy of talented freshman each year. Just something to keep in mind.
Runners to look out for:
Noah Williams '17 (26:27 @ CACs)
Griffin Collaizzi '18 (15:27 5K @ CACs)
Nigel Bates '17
2. Colby College (2nd at NESCAC 2014, 1st at D3 regionals, 5th at NCAA)
Top Returners
David Chelimo '17 (24:12 @ NCAA)
Silas Eastman '17 (24:41 @ NCAA)
Stefan Sandreuter '16 (26:14 @ NCAA)
Griffin Gagnon '17 (26:42 @ CACs, 15:29 5K @ CACs)
Colby loses a powerhouse in Hale, Coffman and Lester, but it is safe to say that the Mules have one of the best one-two punches in the NESCAC, if not THE best. Both Chelimo and Eastman were All-NESCAC and All-New England (Chelimo also an All-American at NCAA). Along with Mazaheri, Chelimo and Eastman will definitely be contending for the individual title (2nd and 6th at NESCAC's last year). However, in order to stay competitive, Colby will need to step up their 3-5 game and close the gap. Two front runners is not quite enough to do it (look at Bowdoin 2 years ago). Their younger guys are gonna need to make some leaps and bounds if the mules want a shot at the title.
Runners to look out for:
Noel Feeney '18
Nathan Madeira '17
Sam Sinkler '18
Jeff Tucker '16 (15:13 5k. Will he run cross?)
3. Amherst (4th @ NESCAC 2014, 2nd @ D3 Regionals, 9th @ NCAA)
Top returners:
Mohammed Hussein '18 (24:34 @ NCAA)
Dan Crowley '16 (25:04 @ NCAA)
Raymond Meijer '17 (26:14 @ NESCAC, 25:28 @ NCAA)
Amherst loses big guns Turissini, Sklar, and Fussell. Freshman Mohammed Hussein proved to be a top contender last year and will continue to do so in 2015. Crowley led the Jeffs' pack at NESCAC and had a strong showing at D3's and nationals. Consistency played in the Jeffs' favor this year, as they have been known to be wildly inconsistent at times. As long as Amherst keeps it together, stays healthy and stays consistent, not only could they contend for the NESCAC title, but they could very well defeat Williams for the Little 3 title for the first time in a very, very, VERY long time ;)
Runners to look out for:
Craig Nelson '18 (sub 15 5k indoors. Impressive)
Steven Lucey '17
Ben Fiedler '17
4. Tufts (5th @ NESCAC 2014, 6th @ D3 Regionals, 22nd @ NCAA)
Top Returners:
Tim Nichols '17 (25:05 @ NCAA)
Luke O'Connor '17 (25:10 @ NCAA)
Nick Guarnacca '16 (25:20 @ NCAA)
Michael Curley '16 (26:27 @ NESCAC)
Ty Enos '18 (26:28 @ CACs, 26:22 @ NCAA)
Tufts loses Greg Hardy and Colin McCrory, only 2 of their top 5. Tufts always seems to be consistent and pulls off really solid pack running. While competitive, they lack frontrunners, which may put them at a slight disadvantage. The Jumbos always seem to come through, however.
Runners to look out for:
James Traestar '16
Bobby McLaughlin '17
5. Middlebury (3rd @ NESCAC 2014, 5th @ D3 Regionals, 13th @ NCAA)
Top Returners:
Sebastien Matt '16 (25:25 @ NCAA)
Samuel Cartwright '16 (25:44 @ NCAA)
Brian Rich '17 (26:35 @ CACs, 26:12 @ NCAA
Midd loses a talented class in Schaaf, Wood and Fox. Midd is always in the mix, however, and usually fields solid recruiting classes. Like Tufts, frontrunners are what Middlebury will need in order to take the title. They have the depth.
Runners to look out for:
Ascencion Aispuro '18 (great name, BTW)
Tim McGovern '18
Peter Elkind '18
6. Bates (7th @ NESCAC 2014, 8th @ D3 Regionals).
Top Returners:
Allen Sumrall '16 (26:12 @ CACs)
Zach Magin '18 (26:17 @ CACs)
Evan Ferguson-Hull '17 (26:45 @ CACs)
Michael Creedon '16
Bates loses their top runner Stansel (All-American in the indoor mile). This was a tough one between putting Bates or Bowdoin in the top 6. Bowdoin may have beaten Bates at NESCACs last year, however the Polar Bears lose three of their top 5, one of which being their front runner. The Bobcats have a young yet talented team. If they stay healthy and improve, they will be competitive and crack the top 6.
Runners to look out for:
Ben Tonelli '18
Joe Doyle '17
Greg Heller '17
