if you have to ask, you probably can't afford it.
Model S Performance
You want a car that you can take if your boss asks you to drive him and some other mangement out for lunch with them.
Something understated, but well appointed and aesthetically pleasing. Also, you want a bit of umph in your horsepower. Because come on, petrol engines should thrill.
Audi A4/S4, Q5/SQ5.
Mercedes - CLA, E-Class, GLK
BMW - higher level 300 or into the 500.
Range Rover - Evoque (maybe)
Jaguar - XE (not released in the US yet)
My dad always wanted a Jaguar. He retired when he had enough money to buy one and still retire. 3 years later, the car wouldn't run and the recession sent him back to work.
Do not spend more than $25k on a car.

Agreed.

You can't be serious. The CLA is the perfect car to drive to a Christopher Street day parade if you know what I mean, the E-Class is for old people and the GLK is the perfect mom car.
If you want to stick with Mercedes, go with the G Class. They're masculine yet luxurious. And you won't get stuck ever, anywhere.

As a former G Wagon owner I can assure you that you'll in fact get stuck everywhere. Mine and many others, broke down constantly and are just awful cars. They are just terrible. The repairs were a fortune which is to be expected, but I actually wanted to drive mine but that didn't happen very often.
I've got 2000 Toyota Sienna w/ just over 250,000 miles on it. That baby runs as smooth as Centro.
Got 3+ kids? No problem, seats 7. Need to haul some lumber? Back seats fold down, you've got a truck.
Driver's windows is broke. Rear hatch remains unlocked. No AC for the back passengers. Sliding door handles are broke - snapped off in the winter. Replaced w/ rope. Muffler is louder than a proud parent's cheer during the 4x400m HS meet.
I get comments all the time. People know when I'm coming, going, and finally arrived!
I am looking to sell mine and move up to the 2013 model, so if you interested I'll offer you a fair price.

First and foremost you certainly have not arrived professionally if you have two or more layers of management above you and you feel being asked to play chauffeur is an career building opportunity.
You should write car commercials...oh wait someone already wrote this one.

This.
Hopefully at some point in your life you had a coach who told you to act like you'd been there before. Same thing. Nothing says "I've arrived" like a classic and some nonchalance.
S550, A8L, or 750il.
Get them fully loaded with the largest engine choice.
Dont get the RS, Amg, M or Alpina versions. They're to boyish.
A 1983 Buick LeSabre. And I'm serious about this.
All of you others who answered this thread and aren't driving an 83 LS, or at least early 80s model, I look down on you.
If you are a Real American, you'll get a Chrysler:
If you want to drive into Google or Qualcomm and get that "What executive is that?" kind of look, get an honest-to-God Mercedes S-class. The engine size doesn't matter to people who have passed puberty (which leaves out crossfitters of course).
Mine is an S430:
V8 engine and gets up to 30mpg on the highway (between Orange County and San Diego)
Needs a quart of oil every 30,000 miles if you haven't changed it by then
You don't need to know how to do anything on the car except change a flat tire because nothing ever goes wrong.
