Couldn't agree more, but that doesn't happen. Still happens in other countries, who then kick our butts in soccer.
We did the youth basketball thing. It is as bad as all the horror stories. The leagues we were in were mixed racially (my white son's coach was black, for example) and I saw no pattern with race.
btw, people always blame the "don't keep score" thing for every evil liberal thing in the world, but that's done to calm down the parents. Doesn't work. Kids can keep the score just fine by themselves. Not having adults officially keep score has no affect on competitiveness in kids.
