In my experience #2 is false. I cancelled my PF membership a few months ago because I was moving. All I did was walk in and ask to cancel. I got a form, filled it out, and was done with it. Never had to give a notice.

I have been a member for 3 plus years. It's a good no frills gym,I did the $99 per year and that is good for life renewal. It is a bit cheesy with the lunk alarm, tootsie rolls etc..But it has the necessities that anyone would require.
Let's say that hypothetically, I wanted to get kicked out of a gym to have my membership canceled and want to be entertained in the process. How could I achieve this? Remember, I want to go out with a funny.
Wear short shorts and no underwear. As you're squatting, take a dump - make sure it comes out of your shorts and onto the floor. As you're cleaning yourself up with one of their towels, go to the front desk and ask them if one of the employees can come over and clean up the mess while you go do some bench presses.

And I DON'T want to go to jail!
If I found out the gym I was paying good money to had a lunk alarm, I'd make it my goal to set that thing off as often as possible.
Your a total moron if you go to a gym to run.
Also, Planet Fitness is awful, No free weights, no FUNCTIONAL fitness.
Invest your $$$ in your future, sign up for a quality gym (such as a CrossFit Box).
In terms of training, don't just let anyone train you. Look for certified trainers. Hint: every single trainer at CrossFit is certified. So you know what you'll be getting.

Then you could strut around yelling "LUNK ALARM! LUNK ALARM!" like you'd just achieved something great.

I agree. I would never run at the fitness center I go to. I do crosstrain quite a bit on those electrical running simulators.
My city predictably has 2-3 ice storms a winter, and sometimes it is just nice to have a break from a long streak of 20 degree mornings, so my gym's treadmills come in handy on such days. I also use it year round for strength and core.
As a prior poster said, I recommend going very early in the morning to beat the crowds if you're planning to anything faster than a jog. Doing an even moderately hard run in a gym full of new year's resolution fatties is a quick way to get kicked out.

But really now, is that really true? I have only heard of one case of that happening, the American guy, Mr. Mayeroff, at his hotel gym in Thailand.
Do gyms really kick people out for running too fast on a treadmill? That doesn't sound right at all...
FYI, I went to PF as a guest and had a nice 40 minute run at 8mph. No one said anything.

I don't know how common it really is, but I received a stern "talking to" from the manager of a national franchise gym because other members were complaining that I was "working out too hard" on the treadmill. The conversation had a definite "comply or take your business elsewhere" tone. My solution was to only do harder or longer treadmill runs there very early in the day when few others were around.
Remember, the gyms make more money off the fatties who walk on the treadmill twice a week than they do from hardcore runners, so who do you think they're going to try to keep happy?
$10 a month is a no-brainer if you have one nearby. Assuming you're not destitute, you could do three runs a month and it would still be worth it. That said, if you have the room or are some distance from a gym, check craigslist for used treadmills. I grabbed a "grandma special" a few years ago for $300 it it lasted me a few thousand miles of regular runs and intervals. Calibration finally went this year but I got my money's worth considering it was around $8-900 new.
Buy your own for $7,000 - $15,000. If you use it 4 months of the year, it will pay for itself by sometime between 2022 and 2033 if you exclude electricity.

I can't imagine a circumstance that would cause me to give someone a "stern talking to" for running too fast on a treadmill. Not saying that didn't happen to you, but I gotta believe that is the exception rather than the rule at 99% of gyms.
As far as making more money from the walkers rather than the runners...that's not true. A walker puts much more strain on a treadmill than a runner. The motor has to work harder to help push along the walker more than it does a runner. Resulting in having to fix or replace the motor sooner. Costing us quite a bit more money.

Witch would suck if your marathon training.
yes, it ruins the entire workout having to push the "start" button again
I've been on treadmills where they auto shutdown if you dismount them for only 10 seconds. Really sucks the big one when doing intervals.
