The playoffs will grow to 8 teams, for sure in 3 years.

This year's college post-season played out nearly perfectly towards expanding towards an 8 and eventually 16 team playoff.
TCU won huge over an alleged SEC powerhouse (at least this year) which showed that TCU truly got shafted in the CFP process which would not have happened in an 8 game playoff. If Baylor had beaten Mich St soundly (like they were through 3 quarters), this too would've helped show that at least 6 teams were worthy of competing as top dog this season.
The two teams who would've been in the old BCS title game (Bama and FSU) got beat by the two teams who were consistently downlplayed all season by the media. Bama is the media darling (the Yankees of college FB) and it's hard to vote against FSU, even when they played bad, since they never did lose (until the post-season) as reigning national champs. If Bama and FSU had won their bowl games, the old school traditionalists against a playoff would've said, See, the BCS has worked all along. Fortunately, that didn't happen this first year of a CFP.
Even Boise State, being the sole representative from a mid-major conf, beat a solid Pac-12 team (which was the only team to be the Ducks this season) which showed the strength of mid-major schools.
Ideally, there needs to be at least a 16 team playoff with AQ's for the champs of all 10 conferences, including the 5 mid-majors. The other 6 spots are then for the next best 6, including independents. Then you truly have a NCAA D1 champ since any of the 125 FBS teams are capable of earning their way to the championship unlike the current system.

Not so fast. We have a $7 Billion, 12 year contract for the playoffs. Think again in 2025.

Yes, and we are working hard to figure out how to get two SEC teams into the final four each and every year. We almost got it done this year. The process just needs a little bit of tweaking.
You all are looking at it wrong. It wouldn't have been a terrible thing if Alabama played FSU in the title game. For all we know one of those two teams may be the best in the country. The best team doesn't always win. I'm not sure who is better between Oregon and FSU, those turnovers were a fluke. I don't know who is better between OSU and Alabama, and neither does anyone else. The best team doesn't always win. Think about the Giants and Patriots a few years back. That is why its called a national champion and not a national best team. The playoff is great, and it is exciting. That doesn't mean a two team title game is a disaster, nor would an Alabama FSU title game have been this year.
